Quickstart
Take a small tool-calling agent from ungoverned to contained in about ten minutes: scan it, watch it run, let AgentFox draft its permissions, approve them, and print the report.
When to use this
Use this page the first time you try AgentFox, or when you want to see what each step of the path produces before you point it at your own agent. Everything runs offline. The sample agent uses the real OpenAI Python client, and a scripted stand-in replaces the API so you need no key and no network.
You need Python 3.11 or newer. If you would rather see the product work before writing any code, skip to the zero-setup demo.
Install
bash python3 -m venv .venv && source .venv/bin/activate pip install openai agentfoxThe core install pulls no model weights and no detector frameworks. The
openaipackage is only there because the sample agent uses it; AgentFox does not depend on it. Extras and where state is kept are on Install and configure.Create the sample agent
A support-triage agent with four tools: it reads a customer record, fetches a web page, sends email and closes tickets. That is the lethal trifecta in one agent: private data, untrusted content, and a way to send data out. The tool names use underscores because OpenAI function names cannot contain dots.

- T-314, the injection, is refused. The recipient address was copied out of the fetched page. No detector was needed to stop it: the rule that fired reads where the value came from, not what the page said.
- T-312 runs end to end. The agent looked up the customer and emailed the address from the CRM, which you declared trusted.
- T-311 and T-313 are escalated. The reply is legitimate, and the message says so: "No argument came from untrusted content." They are held because the agent read a web page earlier in the same run, and under the default
taint_scope = "session"everything after that carries the page's provenance. Each produced an approval a person can grant in the web app or through the API (Approvals).

What you have now
- An agent that can call four tools, each with a declared impact, and nothing else.
- Grants learned from its own traffic and approved by a person, with the injected call kept out of the limits.
- A run in which the injection was refused by provenance, not by a detector.
- A detector layer still in observe, recording what it would have stopped.
- An audit chain covering every decision above (
agentfox report verify).
Turning on the detector layer for model traffic is one more step, agentfox policy enforce baseline, best taken after agentfox policy simulate shows what it would change. See Tune detectors.

Limits of this walkthrough
- The model is scripted. A real model makes different calls, and the drafted grants will reflect them.
- Four tickets is a tiny sample. Let real traffic run longer before drafting permissions, so the limits are read off enough clean calls.
- Containment is only as good as the declarations. A destructive tool declared
readis treated as read by everything downstream (Limits).
